Mirella is the story of a woman, a mother, a wife, a grandmother. Mirella is 71 years old, she spent 43 years of her life with the only person loved. 43 years of sharing, difficulties, laughs and beautiful moments: a family, a house, values handed down. In the last 6 years something changed, Mirella had to fight against her husband’s illness, the Alzheimer. She devoted her life to him. She became his caregiver looking forward with devotion, strength and love…as long as there is life there is hope…even if memories are slowly wasted day by day relentlessly.
What could it be more dolorous than not to be recognized anymore by the person loved, the life partner? Mirella is the love story of a woman for her husband, a woman suddenly forced to face on her own the biggest difficulty experienced, made by hopes and unbelief, pain and resignation, sorrow and powerlessness. Mirella spent her life next her husband, she never abandoned him; not an hospital, not external assistance until his last day, he died with immense pain in his house between his loved ones. He died in the same house where they spent together their whole life.
This is a work that tells of condition and a disease common to lots of families in the world and that affect people regardless from their social status, country and their age: this is the Alzheimer. According to the annual Alzheimer report statistics, the number of people affected by senile dementia is expected to double in the next 20 years, to an estimated 65.7 million in 2030, and to 115.4 million in 2050.
The disease continues being underestimated while resources dedicated to the cure, services, assistance and research are insufficient. The world is facing a serious lack of knowledge in the field of dementia, imposing a terrible burden on the families and caregivers that often do not have any comprehension of what is happening to their loved ones.
Bio
Nato a Roma, vive e lavora nella sua città natale. Inizia il percorso fotografico prima come assistente e fotografo di studio per avvicinarsi sempre più alla fotografia di reportage, fino ad intraprende un percorso da freelance che lo vede collaborare con varie Ong per la realizzazione di alcuni reportage in Italia, Perù, Kenya ed Etiopia. Nel 2009 inizia una collaborazione con il Collettivo Fotografico WSP, e ne entra a far parte definitivamente nel 2010, dove, oltre alla figura di fotografo, svolge l’attività di docente di fotografia di reportage. Oltre a vari lavori in Africa, Sud America e India, ha realizzato importanti lavori su territorio italiano come un reportage sullo sport per disabili, un lavoro all’interno di un carcere minorile ed un lavoro sull’Alzheimer, “MiRelLa”, che gli è valso il primo premio nella sezione Daily Life del World Press Photo 2013, il più importante concorso a livello internazionale di fotogiornalismo.
Nel 2018, vince il suo secondo World Press Photo con il suo lavoro “Omo Change”, un long term che l’ha visto impegnato per 6 anni tra l’Etiopia e il Kenya per documentare i cambiamenti sociali ed ambientali nella bassa Valle dell’Omo a seguito della costruzione ed entrata in funzione della più alta diga di tutta l’Africa. Nel 2017 è stato nominato Reporter per la Terra da Earth Day Italia.
Predilige lavori a medio lungo termine che gli permettono di soffermarsi ed approfondire in maniera unica le tematiche affrontate.
Numerosi i riconoscimenti internazionali ottenuti, come Il World Press Photo nel 2013 e nel 2018, Il Poyi nel 2016 e nel 2018, il Sony, l’Yves Rocher Grant, il PDN Storytelling, il Kolga Tiblisi. I suoi lavori sono stati pubblicati su le più importanti riviste internazionali come 6Mois, LeVie/LeMonde, GEO ES, Stern, Internazionale, Donna Moderna, Espresso, D di Repubblica, National Geographic, Days Japan, GEO Germania, GEO Francia, Neue Zürcher Zeitung Magazine ed ha esposto nelle più importanti città come New York, Madrid, Barcellona, Milano, Roma, La Gacilly.
Il suo lavoro MiRelLa è diventato un libro distribuito dalla Silvana Editoriale ottenendo un successo internazionale ed andando esaurito in poco tempo.
A Settembre 2019, pubblica il suo secondo libro con FotoEvidence, “Omo Change” per chiudere definitivamente il suo lavoro nella Valle dell’Omo in Etiopia. Attualmente fa parte dell’osservatorio Water Grabbing che insieme al giornalista Emanuele Bompan e la ricercatrice Marisosa Iannelli, sta documentando il problema dell’acqua nel mondo.
